Chapter Twenty-Five

Ahead in the distance was the glow of the greater Dallas skyline. The cold air burned Rob’s lungs as he ran to put as much distance as between Waylon’s cabin and himself. Ahead he saw a pair of headlights round the corner. He slowed and ducked into the tree line. He lay down at the foot of a tree and watched the vehicle drive by. It appeared to be just another car on the road and not the purposeful black sedan. Once it passed, Rob sat up and opened his backpack. He pulled out the Walmart sack Waylon gave him and felt inside. Inside there was a shrink-wrapped package that contained a prepaid phone. The other items consisted of three prepaid data cards, two Snickers bars, a 16-ounce water bottle and a canister of pepper spray. He opened the phone’s package and powered it up. The screen flickered to life with the splash screen of the manufacturer. He checked the signal and had two bars. Plenty. He browsed the app store and downloaded Uber. It took three minutes, and then he was able to log in and search available cars in the area. No fleas crawled on his screen. He opened the water bottle and took a long drink. He then shoved everything back in the backpack except the phone, which he pocketed, and one of the Snickers bars, which he tore open and took a bite as he stood. He shouldered the backpack and continued forward toward the distant city lights.

As he walked, he thought through the recent events and what Waylon had shared with him. A pang of sorrow washed over him as he thought of his brief time with Waylon. Already he missed him and knew he would never forget him. But he knew Waylon went out on his own terms, just the way he wanted to. In spectacular fashion. Fires that blazed bright and commie pigs on the barbie. He had to smile at that, but a pang of loneliness shot through his heart, warding the smile away. He missed his family.

He checked the Uber app again, and one flea crept slowly on the main highway ahead. Rob requested it on the app to take him to the Galleria Mall. It was the most central place to where he needed to be he could think of. And the most public. The app responded that driver Kristina was en route to his location and should arrive in ten minutes. Rob breathed a sigh of relief. He thought he might have had to walk all the way into Dallas. He dropped to his knees and rummaged through the backpack for the piece of paper Waylon had handed him just before he went into the tunnel under the bed. He recalled what Waylon said. It contained a name of someone who could help Rob piece together the details that remained of that night in 1970. He also said this person had a similar connection to that night as Rob’s father, which puzzled him.
